My husband bought the Romantic Package for me as a surprise present for Valentines Day, so I have to say that I was such a happy girl, that it might be the reason why I'm not giving them 2 stars only...
Ok, it's a cute place with a tiny garden, and they are 100% clean!
However...
When I get there the receptionist graciously offers me to go to the sauna and then shower. So, I tell her no, since I didn't want to damage my hair that I just had had done. She says "Oh, I promise you it won't damage you hair at all, you will be fine, and the sauna is amazing...blabla.." Great! I was sold! When I say yes, she goes, oh you know what, not now, because now you have to get your massage...
So, I get my massage, the girl tried to talk to me, but she realized after a while that it wasn't my goal there, so it was ok.
Now, Can I go to the sauna? Nope, "you have to get you manis and pedis". Oh, so the I guess I'll go after? Nope, unless you want to damage your nails, and you don't want to do that, right? The lady says. And she continues: You are more than welcome to do so, if you wait 1 hour for your nails to dry off... Ahhhh, thanks, but no thanks...
Nobody told my husband that I could get there early to enjoy the sauna.
Then, the nice lady who did my nails, tells me the color that I chose for my manis is not that good cause doesn't last (which is true since it's dark), so I say, ok, Can I have French then? Yep, but extra $5 for it. Ok, not biggie, I guess.
When I'm checking out the receptionist gets all confused and tells me my total! Really??? Whada? My husband had paid for everything including gratuity, so it was clear that I should be spared of that information. So, I had to say that he had paid already... She is still lost and tells me something about a $5 gratuity. The same lady (maybe manager ?) who didn't let me go to the sauna, didn't help at all (she seemed quite annoyed to be working there btw).
Anyways, not a relaxing exit at all for a Spa. And she gave me the receipt with all the pricing btw... Not cool at all....
You can get way better service for $40ish "spa" manicure (yep, you read it right), $40ish pedi and $75 basic relaxing massage... Way better...
All I thought about was all the pricing instead of the experience...lol.
My husband got extremely frustrated and even wanted to come back... I'm like, oh well, lets move on to our date, shall we???
This family-run spa is a quaint oasis off of Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank. The owner, Jouni, is a third-generation masseur. His healing hands will melt away your stresses, pain, and/or worries. Also, the aetheticians, particularly Alexia, will be able to make you feel and look beautiful. Go for a manicure and a pedicure first, just to see if you like it. . . Do yourself a favor. Go give yourself a wonderful treat or give someone you love a spa experience to remember.
A dear friend from work talked me into coming here to get a massage with her. I was 23 and a massage virgin. It was high time I'd done something about it. Unfortunately, this place left a lot to be desired.
The masseuse I had was chatty. For the entire 50 minutes. I remember a conversation during which he asked me what my sign was. When I explained in a hushed, strained tone that I was a Taurus, he explained that's why I had so much tension in my shoulders. It seems to me that if he already knew that I had a lot of tension in my shoulders, he should just work it out and not tell me about it or explain that the alignment of the planets on the day I was born were to blame.
Also, there's an issue of modesty. I don't really consider myself prude but the lifting and readjusting of my legs definitely could have been done in a more covert, graceful manner. I fully felt like I flashed him and more care should have been taken during this particular part of the massage. My suspicions have been confirmed with every massage I've received hereafter - everyone has been better about this than he was. I don't believe it was weird attempt to catch a glimpse of the goods, just merely a bit of inexperience perhaps or not quite understanding a lady's needs.
Its a nice place to get a facial, the girl who did my facial is a sweety......
The facility gets a 1/2, the treatments deserve a 4. The whole place is a bit run down and the changing/waiting area is tiny ( so tiny that the staff uses the restroom in that area and I could hear them pee). That said, i loved my facial and the new nail tech (I forgot her name) was great! I'm very picky about my mani/pedis and she did a phenomal job (no digging or cutting of cuticles here!). It's pricey for what it is.
There is pros and cons to this place that it out weighs the other. I came here for my first brazillian waxing because my one of my friends is a regular here, and cant stop raving about it.
Pros:
* The place looks like a garden with all these plants and outdoor seating. its just too cute & can see why it would be relaxing.
* The rooms arent that small. And you have your own room so it will be super private.
* The girl who waxed me was very professional. I tried to talk to her because it is really akward when someone is looking at you there! She was nice about everything and did a great job. She even got the little hairs and ingrown hair.
* Afterwards, I sat (trying to sit) outside in the lounge chair with all the plants, it was super cute and it was relaxing.
* My friend (A veteren in the waxing field) went after me, and the girl who waxed me & her, told her that I was a trooper...lol. Loved that comment
* They gave me tea while I wait .Some of the girls working there was nice enough to ask about my waxing and how I liked my first time lol.
* The workers I came across was young & upbeat, Better then some places who the lady is bitchy and old.
* The prices may be overpriced but they do treat you very well like VIP. So you do get what you pay for.
Cons:
* Kind of hard to find on the street if you really arent looking
* PARKING...WOW. its just horrible. It is street parking and heard most of the time its hard to find. And you end up walking a block or two.
* When you do walk in, the first thing that I noticed was that the place is super small
* WAY Overpriced but worth it if you want the real spa treatment
Besides waxing & some spa treatments, everything else is just wayy overpriced that its just not worth it! Waxing & like facials are a bit pricer then other places BUT the extra is worth it if you love the REAL relaxing spa like experiance. If you just want to get in and get out, this place isnt for you. You tend to linger around for a bit after :)
If you do decide to come here....make an appointment
Love this spa! Once you enter the gates, you enter a relaxed, quiet and peaceful place. The staff are friendly and the massages are always perfect, leaves me feeling amazing. Love getting out of the spa and sitting in the garden while sipping tea (favorite part)! I wouldnt change a thing about this place! :)
I love this place. I've been to lots of different spas all over Los Angeles and was a bit skeptical of this place at first because a) it's in Burbank and b) it's in Burbank; not exactly a place renowned for the sophisticated spa experience. But this place is not only a top facility on par with anywhere, but it's so relaxed and friendly. The massages are all excellent (I've been there many times now); the sauna room is fantastic; the facials are wonderful too; and it's just a wonderful place all-around. And, because it's in under-the-radar Burbank--the parking is easy and free!
I can overlook the lack of parking, the fake pictures on their website, or their steep rates if the experience was good, but it was not.
When I came in, they insisted that I take a "rince" in the shower for the "safety" of their staff. The receptionist was such a damn snob too. I explained to her that I took a shower before coming but she just wasn't hearing me. This is the first spa to ever make me do something stupid like this.
When I layed down, the person who was giving me a massage put a thick towel over me because he said it was for "his safety". And because of the thick towel, my back can barely feel the massage he was giving. Plus, he wasnt doing much. I paid for a deep tissue massage and all he was doing was using his palms to press on my back. After a while, I started to get more frustrated and I was telling him to do more than just press on my back with his palms. What an idiot.
Like everyone else, I came here to get a massage and relax, but I only walked away frustrated. I was dressed in a clean, professonal manner when I walked in and they treated me like I was some disease. What the hell is wrong with these people?
If you check my profile, you'll see that I give most business 5 stars because I always give each business the benefit of the doubt and overlook minor flaws. But Burbank Spa & Garden is a horrible establishment. Avoid at all costs. I'd give it 0 out of 5 stars.
This is a great neighborhood day spa. I have gone here at least 20 times over the last 5 years. I often get the Sweedish or Deep Tissue Massage. I have also gotten facials and mani/pedis.
I am not sure where so many negative reviews come from, maybe a singular bad experience or unreasonable expectations. Some of these rants are off - maybe people thought they were going to the Four Seasons. I have traveled a lot and been to spas at high end hotels and many day spas.
I wouldn't say this is a "drive 35 miles" destination spa, but one if you live in the area, or work in the area. Here is a more objective look.......
The good:
- damn good sweedish, deep tissue massage
- good variety of services
- moderately priced
- sauna and shower room
- quaint, unpretentious atmosphere, not snobby
- nice garden to sit in and relax (if you are into it)
- longer tenured staff (I'd had what I thought were a few newbies at the Burke Williams - I like BW but I'd characterize it as more "mass produced")
- local, easy access in uncongested area
The bad:
- not a destination
- based on my experience overpriced mani/pedicure
- only sauna, no steam room or hot tub
- reception can be flaky - I'd give 3/5 on reception
- no parking lot, but please, your'e in Burbank, not the overcrowded west side!
